It feels great to “rightsize” into a new retirement home. Often, moving into a retirement community means that you no longer need to worry about yardwork and other responsibilities around the home. But one of the biggest challenges that is faced in this transition is deciding what you want to do with all of the items that have been stored in your current home for so long.
Often, retirees are moving from a home where they lived for decades. Over the years, possessions accumulated and much of these items are still in good condition, but they are no longer needed in the next chapter of life.
If you or a family member are preparing to move, there are a few things that you can do to make sure the extra belongings go to a good home:
- Family Members: Giving these items to family members could be an option. For example, sometimes children or grandchildren are grateful to hold onto smaller, sentimental items.
- Online Marketplaces: If you are looking for a way to generate a bit of cash, then online marketplaces are great options to consider. Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, or local classified websites are easy to use. Just be sure that you only accept cash payments to avoid the reversal of digital transactions.
- Garage or Estate Sale: Another option to earn a bit of money is to hold a garage or estate sale. Coordinate with family members for help, and consider inviting other neighbors on the street to participate in a multi-family event.
- Donation Centers: A simple, efficient way to offload personal items is by dropping them at a local donation center. You might find a charity or religious organization that will accept donations. It feels good to know that you are helping recognized groups such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, homeless shelters, and more.
